Big Rock Candy Mountain

I've started growing sugar crystals for the purpose of photographing them (so not just because they're delicious).

I started off in the classic skewered rock candy fashion.

I'm interested in these crystalline forms partly due to their combination of pattern and disorder. Repeating structures arise chaotically, determined by variations in temperature and concentration, vibrations, surface imperfections and impurities.

I'm also interested in how these miniature forms evoke natural rugged landscapes. Fractal patterns repeat at different orders of scale. More on that to come.
